At the same time it provides a keen insight into the mind of a man who went on to become one of the key spokesmen for black rights in the early part of the twentieth century, and one of the founders of the African National Congress in 1912. For this centenary edition the editors have returned to the original manuscript of the dairy in order to provide the fullest and most accurate version possible. Additional information yielded by fresh oral and archival research has also been incorporated
